Elevating Community for Connected Learning

Maywood Hills Elementary School

Bothell, WA

Embracing Topography and Views

A cheerful two-story addition and modernization expands and improves diverse community and educational settings while stitching together a 16-foot grade change across campus. New learning spaces are tucked into the hillside and positioned to capture daylight. Above, the school’s first cafeteria introduces vital shared space, supporting daily activities with breathtaking views of the Cascade Mountains.

Educational Horizons Unfold

The design enhances students’ learning experience with six state-of-the-art classrooms clustered around a collaborative learning zone. A specialized music room and flexible multipurpose spaces expand hands-on engagement in the arts and sciences. The playground supports greater inclusion with new activity structures, covered area and nature play that extend learning possibilities into the site.

Maximizing Impact Campus-wide

Radically transformed circulation patterns present a welcoming entry while enhancing safety, accessibility and site legibility. A ground-source heat exchange system, high-performance envelopes, effective daylighting and healthy materials improve energy, carbon, wellbeing and ecosystem performance in a cost-effective solution.
