Transforming Streets into Parks! Construction of Gemenskap Park began in Seattle’s East Ballard neighborhood this week. The project with Seattle Parks and Recreation converts two full blocks of an existing street into public open space providing improved safety, green stormwater treatment, a multi-use path for biking and neighborhood greenway connections. Congratulations to East Ballard Community Association, which has kept this idea alive for so many years! http://bit.ly/2qEdmIR

Wishing all our friends a cozy and restful new year! This year’s holiday card features original artwork by Nayive Kalkach, an interior designer at Mithun whose love for art started in her native Mexico City, where she often escaped the intense urbanity by curling up and reading a good book.

Check out the diagrid timber wave made possible by an 8-axis robotic mill! A member of our team recently attended a workshop at the UBC Centre for Advanced Wood Processing that explored advanced timber fabrication techniques in architecture. The technology enables a digital loop between design and fabrication that opens new doors to innovation in timber construction, and potentially a re-interpretation of wood architecture. The design opportunities are exciting. More info and photos are available via ICD: http://icd.uni-stuttgart.de/?p=21333

Volunteers from Mithun are partnering with Sawhorse Revolution to guide students in the design and documentation of a tiny house for a family experiencing homelessness. The team is meeting with eleven Franklin High School students over an eight-week period, teaching design concepts, studying precedent imagery, and hosting collaborative design charrettes and crits. This environment invites students into a memorable project, where ideas are realized, problem-solving skills are sharpened, and chances are taken to do something extraordinary for those around us. Next semester, Sawhorse Revolution will facilitate the construction of this house, built by the same students in collaboration with a professional builder in Seattle. #DesignforPositiveChange

We’re thrilled to be working with Hensel Phelps on UC San Diego Nuevo East Graduate Student Housing, our third design-build collaboration for the campus. Nuevo East is a $211 million, 712,000 sf student housing community consisting of more than 1,374 beds and related amenity spaces in six buildings. Residential spaces are anchored by the Exchange, a dynamic student resource center with multi-purpose amenity and gathering spaces, university offices and support programs to promote health and wellness. http://bit.ly/2AxMpYG

Our team recently volunteered for Harvest Day at the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation's (TNDC) Tenderloin People’s Garden. Did you know that San Francisco’s Tenderloin District is one of the only neighborhoods in the city without a full-service grocery store, making access to fresh, affordable food a daily struggle for the many low-income residents? This incredible gardening program began in 2010 on a vacant lot near San Francisco City Hall, and has expanded to include four rooftop gardens and produce about 2,500 pounds of food annually. Opening in 2018, our affordable housing project with TNDC at 1036 Mission will add a new rooftop garden to the mix. For more info about TNDC’s gardens and to volunteer: http://www.tndc.org/programs/tl-peoples-garden/

We recently joined with UC San Diego and Hensel Phelps to celebrate the groundbreaking of Nuevo West Graduate Student Housing. When it opens in 2019, the mixed-use residential community will house 804 graduate student residents as well as university medical center patients and their families. Congrats to the entire project team! http://bit.ly/2AHVLnA
