A thoughtful renovation, the University of Washington Children’s Center at Portage Bay transforms an existing University parking garage into a sustainable, connected and playful early learning center for infants and children up to age five. The design supports Montessori-based learning with diverse opportunities for hands-on engagement, and linked indoor and outdoor learning spaces for exploration. 📷: @k7scott

This renovation and expansion project updates allied health and STEM programs while creating a much-needed hub for community gathering at the heart of the North Seattle College campus. The steel-framed addition floats over the original 1970s post-tensioned concrete structure, introducing light and color into the predominantly gray campus. Reaching beyond the original Silver-level target, the LEED Gold certified building incorporates green stormwater strategies, grey water and daylight harvesting, chilled beams and a dedicated outside air system. đź“·: @laraswimmer

We love to collaborate with artists to create unique spaces and experiences! For this Seattle technology workplace, @ellenpicken crafted a vibrant wall mural at the entry lobby. The black linework is inspired by the structure of the internet while the color represents connections it makes between people, information, cultures and ideas. Some imagine a mystic grotto overflowing with waterfalls. What do you see? đź“·: @k7scott

Mithun’s Parametric Planting Design R+D team, together with @landau_design, is pursuing the creation of a robust parametric planting design toolset. By combining spatial, environmental and ecological parameters with extensive plant data and custom digital workflows, the team aims to enable novel, scalable and efficient planting design methods that produce complex, resilient, biodiverse and beautiful outcomes. We’re looking forward to developing this project and more in the coming year. Learn more about our R+D work at www.mithun.com/design/r-d/ (or link in bio).

The Build Carbon Neutral 2.0 R+D project advances Mithun’s previous work developing the buildcarbonneutral.org (BCN) calculator, a publicly available and widely referenced tool for early estimation of a project’s embodied carbon impact. The current effort updates the BCN methodology to better address complex construction types, specific structural quantities, site design and above-ground biomass for simplified carbon assessments. Mithun R+D drives positive change by advancing design knowledge and its application. The Model Resilient Zoning Code with Equity team is examining the potential transformation of municipal zoning codes to support, rather than hinder, resilient communities. Building from design experience interacting with policies that obstruct human health, passive building performance, climate resilience and onsite-energy generation, this research effort explores an alternative zoning framework to transform the core principles of land use regulations. Educational opportunities at the Washington Park Arboretum Environmental Education Center engage visitors from their arrival and continue to unfold throughout each visit. To protect the regional watershed and expand learning opportunities on site, vehicular runoff from the parking lot is processed and celebrated by new green stormwater infrastructure as it flows towards Duck Bay. An undulating pedestrian boardwalk invites visitors to experience the series of lush stormwater rooms from high to low. Image by Plomp for Mithun.

Sprouting from a collaborative partnership between the University of Washington, Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Arboretum Foundation, the new Environmental Education Center dramatically expands educational programming at this beloved park. The predesign concept features an expressive green roof and strong connection between new learning areas, the educational courtyard and the meadow beyond. CalArts’ ability to inspire the performances of its conservatory-trained musicians is paramount. In response, the Wild Beast Pavilion frames the individual soloist in recital mode and acts as a generous forestage to accommodate the Institute's Gamelon concerts. A combination of rotating, sliding, and pivoting surfaces allow the pavilion to easily and quickly adapt both spatially and acoustically to a variety of performance configurations. The audience is welcomed with casual seating, terraced steps and a balcony for receptions. Designed by our Mithun Hodgetts + Fung studio in Los Angeles. 📷: @tom_bonner_photography
