We are thrilled to share that Mithun received two Awards of Excellence in last night’s @WashingtonASLA Professional Awards program! Louisiana Children’s Museum (LCM) was recognized in the General Design, Private Ownership category, and Yosemite National Park Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias was recognized for Research, Analysis and Planning. We are honored to be included among this year’s recipients and thankful to be part of such a thoughtful and creative design community here in Washington. The original, Mithun-designed Fairwood Library in Renton, Washington was configured as three side-by-side gable forms. This expansion designed by Schacht Aslani Architects (which joined Mithun in 2019) inserts a long-span, flat-roofed pavilion between the original volumes, creating a central space that organizes the library’s activities. The design connects patrons with views of the surrounding woodland, increases access to the library’s broadening array of resources, and creates a community living room. It’s a story of renewal and connection that was just meant to be. 📷: Tim Bies

Newcastle Library is an iconic landmark at the center of Newcastle’s evolving civic village. Its open and transparent façade welcomes the community in, while flexible reading and gathering spaces offer patrons a comfortable destination to relax, interact and gain knowledge. The grand, light-filled Reading Room incorporates a custom frit pattern inspired by the brain’s electrical activity. Early design studies reveal how the alpha rhythm—the most common brainwave activity during a state of learning, meditation or analyzing information—is abstracted on the building façade, reflecting the energy of the library on the community. 📷: Benjamin Benschneider

Set within an existing student residential neighborhood, @UCIrvine Verano 8 presents a new paradigm for graduate student housing on campus with a series of five higher-density apartment buildings adjacent to new community center that welcomes the entire Verano neighborhood. Integrated landscape, architecture and interior design focuses on holistic placemaking, sustainability, health and wellness. Large scrims enliven the active west edge of the project site, provide a unique identity for each building, and shade late afternoon solar exposure and heat gain. The communal plaza plays off a strong pedestrian axis and features bioretention planters that treat stormwater runoff. LEED Platinum and Fitwel certifications targeted. Is #throwbackthursday still a thing? This one makes us think it should be... Novelty Hill-Januik Winery celebrates the art and science of winemaking as well as wine’s agrarian roots. Building and landscape work in harmony to heighten the senses and blur the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, materials and forms.
