UC San Diego Nuevo West Graduate Student Housing features a welcoming plaza and gateway presence at the East Campus terminus of the Gilman Bridge, a vital connection for pedestrians and bikes to main campus. Bright color, light and transparency provide a clear signal of entry and activity to arriving residents. Slices of color also highlight the buildings’ staggered façade pattern that directs prevailing winds to cool the building with natural ventilation. LEED Gold certified. Happy #PrideMonth! Join us in celebrating our LGBTQIA+ communities, and standing in solidarity with our colleagues, friends and partners against discrimination and for justice throughout the year. We all live more freely when all identities are celebrated. We’d also like to spotlight a current Mithun R+D study being led by three designers exploring an approach to gender inclusive design practice and the creation of built environments, free from the harmful gender binary. Kelsi Kaczmarek (they/them), Claire Joseph and Jake Minden (he/him) apply an integrated process to this research from their respective disciplines of Interior Design, Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Stay tuned for more information about the team’s findings. Illustration by Kelsi Kaczmarek.

Informal study spaces at each end of The Bush School new Upper School corridor feature exposed wood structure, abundant daylight and expansive views, creating a biophilic experience that supports student health and well-being. Classrooms are designed for agile learning with moveable furniture and white boards positioned for student-directed exploration and ideation throughout the space. Efficient all-electric heating and partial cooling is supplemented by natural ventilation and ceiling fans for user control of comfort. 📷: @laraswimmer

The new Bush School upper campus expansion pays respect to the school’s historic Gracemont academic building (visible in the foreground) in materiality, massing and siting. This modern interpretation of a masonry and wood structure leverages mass timber elements to create an efficient, low-carbon building for the next 100 years. The project is targeting Passive House and net-zero energy certifications. 📷: @laraswimmer

This new workplace expresses the strong values of a diverse family of marine transportation and distribution companies, uniting its operations within a single headquarters for the first time. At the office’s heart, shared workspaces radiate from a communicating stair, reinforcing connection between businesses and strengthening personal relationships. A vast art collection—including a 30-foot hand-carved totem pole that ascends three levels—details the vibrant history of the multi-generational family business and brings this legacy to life. 📷: @k7scott
