Our work with @SecurityProperties on Pepsi Blocks is featured in Portland Monthly magazine’s coverage of “Three Projects Reshaping Portland Neighborhoods.” The first phase of this exciting mixed-use development includes housing, a public plaza and renovation of an iconic mid-century Pepsi warehouse structure into a retail pavilion that could accommodate a large food hall—expanding the Sandy Boulevard food scene that already features the Zipper, Providore Fine Foods and the Ocean. The new Middle Earth Towers at UC Irvine has achieved @USGBC #LEEDPlatinum certification! From century-old passive techniques like natural cross ventilation to state-of-the-art technologies such as photovoltaics, every design decision contributes in multiple ways to deliver carbon reduction and the deepest green integration. Residential floors are 100% naturally ventilated with operable windows that transition in hue from greens at the lower levels to blues above. 📷: @k7scott

We’re excited to share that the @HenselPhelps | Mithun design-build team was awarded the new Verano 8 graduate student housing project at @UCIrvine. The $215 million residential community will house 1,050 students and related amenity spaces in seven buildings targeting LEED Platinum certification. Set within an existing neighborhood of low-rise residences, the design presents a new paradigm for graduate housing with a series of five higher-density residential buildings surrounding a vibrant community center that welcomes all. Verano 8’s concrete building frame maximizes durability, minimizes long-term maintenance, and enables the use of seven-story structures that preserve valuable open space for resident enjoyment. The new, taller buildings fan out on the site, defining a series of outdoor rooms and gardens. Learn more about the design: bit.ly/3eVzAeq (link also in bio) Image: Plomp

We’re carrying #EarthDay50 energy into the weekend and beyond. As inspiration, we offer a couple shots from the Sustainability Treehouse, an icon of environmental stewardship and AIA COTE Top Ten Project. At each step, it captures the wonder of childhood adventure and challenges visitors to apply meaningful stewardship ideals in their own lives. Together, we can make a big positive impact. Happy 50th Earth Day! We celebrate today recognizing we cannot join together in our parks and streets, but with a renewed understanding that each of us are linked as citizens in a global community, responsible for the health, life and prosperity of each other. The visitor experience at Louisiana Children’s Museum (LCM) is designed to connect people with nature from their arrival—moving through groves of live oaks, across water, onto the large ‘lagoon porch,’ through the building and into a courtyard and sensory gardens. Along the way, the periodic mist of Fujiko Nakaya’s cloud sculpture envelopes people on the lagoon bridge, instantly and viscerally creating a magical and inviting space for children, and an immersive water experience. COVID-19 has created an unprecedented challenge for low-income individuals and families. In response, Capitol Hill Housing (CHH) has launched a resilience fund to help sustain communities: supporting residents, connecting small businesses to resources to help them survive the closures, and continuing the vital work of CHH. If you’re able, lend your support to help preserve Seattle’s diverse and vibrant neighborhoods. Learn more via link in bio (https://www.capitolhillhousing.org/covid-19resilience/index.php) . Some affordable housing providers that we work with in the Bay Area have had to discontinue on-site food pantries as part of current pandemic response. The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank is facing an unprecedented challenge to support these vulnerable residents who are currently food insecure as well as actively preparing to support those who may now be facing hunger as a result of lost hours, wages or jobs. Learn about their COVID-19 response initiatives including pop-up and drive-through pantries, and how you can help: https://www.sfmfoodbank.org/response-to-covid19/ (clickable link in bio). 📷: @brucedamonte

With homeless people at high risk of severe health impacts during the coronavirus outbreak, our friends at Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) and @SawhorseRevolution are working with the city and county to rapidly build and expand tiny house villages in the Greater Seattle area. Thank you for all that you’re doing to create shelter and safe haven for more of our fellow residents! Consider adding your support to these efforts – tiny houses cost at least $2,700 to develop, and organizations rely upon donations and volunteer labor to make it happen. Images are of our Wunderbar Recycled House, a current Sawhorse Revolution project designed in collaboration with students at Franklin High School and our colleagues at LMN Architects and Graphite Design Group.
