UC San Diego Nuevo West received an early substantial completion! This mixed-use residential community opens in March to graduate students and families of patients at the university medical center. The staggered façade pattern, inspired by prevailing winds, supports natural ventilation, views and daylight. Building forms bend and shift to create intersecting spaces that connect student communities. Design-build delivery by Mithun and Hensel Phelps. LEED Gold target. Image: @mir.no

This new interdisciplinary learning center transforms the Olympic College campus—redefining the main entry, completing the pedestrian spine and joining with adjacent academic buildings to form a central quadrangle. The design strengthens visibility of the college’s arts and health programs, fosters synergies between the disciplines and encourages student engagement. At the building’s heart, a three-story atrium reinforces community with layered gathering spaces that connect to specialized studio, simulation, practice and performance venues. Designed as Schacht Aslani Architects. LEED Gold certified. http://mithun.com/project/olympic-college-college-instruction-center/ (clickable link in bio) 📷: @k7scott

This month we’re excited to introduce significant projects designed by Schacht Aslani Architects, which has joined our integrated design team at Mithun. The new Cedar River Watershed Headquarters supports the work of Seattle Public Utilities to protect the ecological health of the region’s water supply. The building consolidates operations, natural resources, protection and cultural resources staff into a space that embraces the natural environment, and promotes workforce collaboration and efficiencies. The LEED Gold certified and net-zero energy target design supports resilient operations and limited dependence on the energy grid during harsh winter conditions. 📷: @laraswimmer

UC Irvine’s Middle Earth Expansion weaves a new living-learning community into the larger campus fabric. Two residential towers rise above a mixed use podium and richly landscaped base, echoing the natural form and color of the region’s limestone canyons. Centrally located along the central Ring Road, a primary pedestrian connector on campus, this gateway project offers diverse pathways to access or pass through Middle Earth. 📷: @k7scott

HANDS-ON LEARNING: Student-led exploration drives learning at the Athenian School’s new industrial arts maker space. In the Mithun-designed Makers Studio, an array of tools and electronics support student-led projects including an FAA approved two-seat plane made by hand, a bio-digester that makes methane from compost, a mobile refrigeration unit with electronic generation for third world countries and even a scalable bionic heart and prosthetic limb. Exciting to see the innovations happening here! 📷: Joe Fletcher
