We are excited to participate in PARK(ing) Day as part of Alleyways Alive tonight in San Francisco! Our Hygro Rays installation manifests the interplay between relative humidity and materiality. Wood grain orientation, shape, size and wood species all impact how humidity causes the wood to change form over time. Come and check out how this invisible force transforms material and brings life to the alleyway. The event runs from 7pm – 10pm tonight (Sept 20th) at Fern Alley (Between Polk and Larkin).

The green roof atop Heartline’s timber office building features drifts of plant material to create a pattern similar to that of wood grain. Where the roof slopes, creating areas of greater soil volume, large perennials and shrubs are planted to give more seasonal color. In contrast, drifts of river cobble and sedums create patterns in the shallowest portions of the roof. Set within the planted wood grain are outdoor gathering spaces for the office building’s users. We’re excited to celebrate the grand opening of the new Louisiana Children’s Museum in City Park tomorrow, August 31st! By integrating indoor and outdoor interactive experiences in a park setting, the new campus presents a unique model for children’s museums. Exhibits and community resources are distributed across two linked buildings, carefully sited to protect existing live oaks while enhancing the lagoon and open space for environmental education. The choreography of the visitor experience connects people and nature—moving through groves of live oaks, across water, and into a courtyard and sensory gardens—while engaging children in hands-on exploration of the world and important issues of our time. 📷: Webb Bland

The Huxley is nominated for the 2019 Seattle Design Review People's Choice Award in Urban Design Excellence! Located on a gateway site to the West Seattle Junction neighborhood, The Huxley provides transit-oriented housing density at a neighborhood scale. Inspiration for the building’s massing, detailing and material choices was derived from the site’s connection to the West Seattle steel industry. A generous ground-level setback defines a raised walkway at the live/work units, inviting passers-by to linger and explore the shops. 📷: @k7scott Cast your ballot in person at the Seattle Design Festival Block Party at Lake Union Park (860 Terry Ave N) this weekend, August 24 & 25, 10am – 7pm! For those out of the area, we’ll share online voting information when available.

Designed as a community front porch, the courtyard at Liberty Bank Building stores rainwater and provides residents with a relaxing way to come and go each day. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the site as home of the first black-owned bank west of the Mississippi, opened in 1968. The “history” portal marks the point of entry, built with bricks and safety-deposit box number plates that were salvaged from the original bank building. Drum-shaped benches by artist Esther Ervin are inspired by the significance of drums in African culture, often used in weddings, funerals and other special events. 📷: @k7scott
