Thanks to everyone that came out for the recent launch party and book-signing to celebrate the release of “Gordon Walker: A Poetic Architecture” at @petermillerbooks! The beautiful book captures Gordon’s remarkable body of work, beloved personality, mentorship of generations of designers, and influence on the evolution of Pacific Northwest regional architecture and modernism. We feel lucky to have him among us.
A water runnel meanders through the new Louisiana Children’s Museum landscape and opens up to the "Hummock Hop”—a place for jumping, splashing and tracking the footprints of wild marsh animals. Wild animals have already moved into the new marsh and we look forward to children exploring these spaces when the new museum opens August 31! 📷: Christian Runge
It’s the first day of summer, and school’s out (or getting close!) across the country. We are honored to work with diverse PreK-12 schools on master planning, new and renovated facilities that strengthen curriculum and support experiential 21st century learning. Memorable gathering and learning spaces at The Athenian School’s new Innovation Hall feature seamless indoor-outdoor connections framing views of the Mount Diablo watershed. 📷: @joefletcherphoto
Four days and counting! We are excited to support the Design With Nature Now Symposium at The McHarg Center. When we think about Rising Waters, we think of our partnership with Metro Parks Tacoma to create a long term vision for their waterfront in Washington State. This project addressed specific sea level rise issues while prioritizing community values and storytelling. Community outreach was intentionally wide and prioritized — Salishan Night Out, the Tacoma Urban League at First Creek Middle School, Bryant Middle School, the Tacoma Community Boat Builders, and the Tacoma Urban League Sisterhood in the City program. 📷: @metroparkstacoma
Uber recently invited a handful of leading design teams to advance their global vision for a multi-modal future unifying ground and air mobility. Unveiled at the Uber Elevate Summit in Washington D.C. today, our “SkyPark” design concept for Los Angeles focuses on the greater community, incorporating transit connectivity, sustainable performance and neighborhood placemaking with an expansive public amenity at ground level. The design leverages pre-fabricated parts to support eVTOL aircraft take off, landing and turntable parking as well as spaces for multi-modal transit users and more than two acres of community park. We had a blast this week at Louisiana Children’s Museum for the #AAM2019 workshop and opening event. Great few days touring the new campus with museum director Julia Bland, conference attendees and friends including Eric Nelson of @nordicmuseum and Cecilia Kjellgren, Swedish Honorary Consul in New Orleans. Can’t wait for opening day this fall! 📷: Julia Bland, Michael Fiegenschuh
Thank you, @landarchmag for your fantastic cover article about the restoration of Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias at Yosemite National Park! “Mithun’s intervention has rationalized and calmed the logistics of a visit, added accessible trails, and provided formerly missing services. It has repaired the natural hydrology. Distance, perspective—the grove as a whole—are conveyed now, by the opening of long views, establishment of strategic lookouts, even installation of ‘leaning benches’ whose backs are canted low so you can gaze up into the canopy without hurting your neck. Individual sequoias still impress with their lofty height and elephantine girth, their room-sized hollows, their great age.” Check out the March issue to learn about these majestic trees, and changes made to protect them while enhancing the visitor experience. 📷: Christian Runge, Susan Olmsted
Mithun has committed to purchasing 50% or more of catering for meetings and events from local woman-owned businesses in honor of Women’s History Month. Our growing team is more than 50% women—with increased leadership at all positions. Today’s lunch event was a highlight of the week!
626 Mission Bay Boulevard earned the Best Affordable Housing Deal of the Year from SF Business Times! Located on a prominent site along the Fourth Street retail corridor, the project is designed to enhance community through diverse common spaces and amenities that connect low-income families with neighborhood programs, employment opportunities and a sense of community. It has also helped enliven Mission Bay with programs like nonprofit 826 Valencia’s new writing lab and “enchanted forest retail store.” 📷: @brucedamonte
