We were honored to work with the Yosemite Conservancy and National Park Service to restore, protect and provide access to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. These trees are described as “witness trees”—quiet observers that continue to preside over successive layers of human and natural experience. Wishing you restorative experiences in the year to come! Mithun recently partnered with Techbridge Girls to inspire a group of 20 students to change the world through careers in STEM. The girls from Chinook Middle School spent the day with women in our architecture, landscape architecture and interior design teams, learning about design careers and working side-by-side on a hands-on activity that emphasized how each discipline shapes the built environment. What an incredible learning experience for all involved. A participant shared, “I am more interested in engineering and architecture… I want to make schools that have a great wellness structure for kids to love to work in.” We agree! 📷: Maren McBride

Nestled into a steeply sloping site at the campus edge, the @UCLA Lot 15 Residence Halls are bordered by an ecological preserve, residential neighborhood and the formalized campus grid. The design celebrates this context, drawing native landscape and pedestrian circulation through the site to create an immersive living/learning experience within the grove. Image: Plompmozes

What an inspiring community! Sharing some moments from our amazing time at #WeCare2018 working with local youth to create handmade gifts for their family and friends. The best part? Hearing the excitement and pride of these artists about their gifts: “This is the first year I’ve given someone a present.” / “This hopefully will help my dad. A friend of his died and he can’t get over it.” / “One of my family traditions is my uncle always brings us eggnog. This year I’m going to hand him this present and he’s going to say, ‘Kash, you got me a present?!’” Thanks for leading the day, @hermanmiller. We can’t wait until next year!

We had a great time this week participating in the #WeCare2018 holiday event, which helps kids at the Rotary Boys & Girls Club create holiday presents for their loved ones. Our team assembled dozens of canvases and stencils, ready for the creative vision of the artists, aged 5-13. Next up, highlights from the big event!

We’re currently working with Mission Housing and Related California on an affordable housing development next to the Balboa Park BART station in San Francisco’s Mission District. Balboa Park Upper Yard incorporates up to 120 units of low- and very-low-income housing and ground-floor community-serving space, as well as open space on a connected property owned by BART. We recently gathered as a firm to celebrate our collective work, share project stories and foster connections across offices. The highlight of the day was a lively and rewarding exploration of What We Love: what excites us to get up in the morning / our favorite interaction with a designed environment / what would make a satisfying career. We’d love to hear what you think, too!

What a great event at Peter Miller Books yesterday to celebrate the launch of Daniel Solomon's new book! Thanks to all who came to join in the rich discussion about our shared love of cities.

Situated in the forested slopes of the Summit Bechtel Reserve, the Sustainability Treehouse is a unique icon of environmental stewardship that redefines the relationship between building and landscape. The towering 125-foot steel frame connects visitors with panoramic views of the ground, tree canopy and sky. Ascending indoor and outdoor platforms, visitors learn about sustainable design and ecology through immersive experiences and hands-on exhibits. 📷: Joe Fletcher
