Bocce anyone? This beautiful summer weather has us thinking about the indoor-outdoor gathering spaces at @nhjwinery. The destination winery celebrates the art and science of winemaking as well as wine’s agrarian roots. Building and landscape work in harmony to heighten the senses and blur the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, materials and forms. The design received an AIA Institute Honor Award for Interior Architecture. 📷: Benjamin Benschneider

The design of Miraval Resort and Spa shows how a whole-building approach to sustainability can create a sensory-rich experience for residents and guests. Sweeping views to the south and east connect the Catalina Mountains to Miraval’s campus and establish its character as a place for contemplation and healing. Rain is an event in the desert, so rain chains serve as drain spouts to express water audibly. Rammed earth walls, made from the local desert’s sandy soil, create efficient thermal shells with an ancient craft. 📷: Robert Reck
