Since its opening in 1922, the @HollywoodBowl has been the premier destination for live music in Southern California, hosting everyone from Billie Holiday to The Beatles to Yo-Yo Ma under the iconic silhouette of its concentric-arched band shell. Our Los Angeles studio, Mithun | Hodgetts + Fung completed master planning and redesign of the landmark performing arts center and amphitheater with Gruen Associates, executive architect. The new band shell re-invents the acoustics, enhances the functionality and nearly doubles the size of the eighty-year-old icon it replaced, while echoing the memory and visual identity of the beloved original. The structure enhances the experience of traditional orchestral ensembles, mic’d performances and large traveling shows. 📷: Tom Bonner
Tell us, what shows have you seen at the Hollywood Bowl?
We’re excited to participate in this weekend’s Seattle Design Festival, a two-day street fair celebrating the powerful ways design affects our lives. Our contribution, the Pop-up Lounge celebrates decentering the designer through active listening to community needs. In conversations with Sawhorse Revolution, a fabulous non-profit that teaches youth carpentry and design through community projects, Mithun learned that they needed tables… so we built a collection for the temporary exhibit and later relocation to the new Sawhorse classroom. We hope you’ll swing by Lake Union Park this weekend, Aug 21 & 22, and visit the Pop-up Lounge to engage with other guests and consider the voices that are often left out of design conversations!
RT @UHIpodcast: A new episode of the Green in Action Podcast drops tomorrow! In “Getting into Integrated Design” @annetorney, @mithun_design, talks about the importance of putting the project at the center of the design process. Subscribe to the podcast: http://green-in-action.castos.com

A thoughtful renovation, the University of Washington Children’s Center at Portage Bay transforms an existing University parking garage into a sustainable, connected and playful early learning center for infants and children up to age five. The design supports Montessori-based learning with diverse opportunities for hands-on engagement, and linked indoor and outdoor learning spaces for exploration. 📷: @k7scott
