At UC San Diego Nuevo West, large community lawns create an inclusive vibe, inviting residents to engage in active games, study or simply linger among friends and neighbors. Outdoor amenities include abundant bike paths and storage, shared barbeque areas, a shaded hammock garden for lounging, and community gardens for cultivating food and relationships. UC San Diego Nuevo West Graduate Student Housing features a welcoming plaza and gateway presence at the East Campus terminus of the Gilman Bridge, a vital connection for pedestrians and bikes to main campus. Bright color, light and transparency provide a clear signal of entry and activity to arriving residents. Slices of color also highlight the buildings’ staggered façade pattern that directs prevailing winds to cool the building with natural ventilation. LEED Gold certified. Design-build collaboration with Hensel Phelps. 📷: @brucedamonte

Happy #PrideMonth! Join us in celebrating our LGBTQIA+ communities, and standing in solidarity with our colleagues, friends and partners against discrimination and for justice throughout the year. We all live more freely when all identities are celebrated. We’d also like to spotlight a current Mithun R+D study being led by three designers exploring an approach to gender inclusive design practice and the creation of built environments, free from the harmful gender binary. Kelsi Kaczmarek (they/them), Claire Joseph and Jake Minden (he/him) apply an integrated process to this research from their respective disciplines of Interior Design, Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Stay tuned for more information about the team’s findings. Illustration by Kelsi Kaczmarek.

Bioretention planters collect and treat stormwater as part of the school’s @salmonsafe certification, the first ever among K-12 schools. 📷: @laraswimmer
