Elaine Liffgens led us on a site visit of 450 Alaskan Way, where rustic roots find a contemporary home. A wooden trellis encourages movement through the lobby, which is long and linear due to below-grade parking constraints. The exposed brick of an adjacent building acts as a feature wall, highlighting the historic character of the Pioneer Square neighborhood. On the 9th floor, a lounge and amenity spaces lead to a roof deck offering panoramic views of the Seattle Waterfront and downtown.

Completed in collaboration with @interim_cda, Hirabayashi Place brings affordable housing and a daycare with rooftop play area to the Seattle International District’s historic Japantown. The building is named for Gordon Hirabayashi, who defied the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII, and features art installations that will enlighten visitors about his legacy of justice. 📷: @laraswimmer
