Sharing a peek into the creative work of our 2018 J. Don Bowman Scholarship recipients. Named in honor of an esteemed designer and leader at Mithun, this annual award supports selected team members’ artistic explorations, an unrestricted opportunity that often incorporates learning a new art/craft or working on an independent creative project. This year’s highlights include wood carving (Emily Hagen), culinary adventures (Nathaniel Smith), botanical textile dyes (Alexa Villanueva), poetry of place (Chip Hammer) and ink drawings (Charlie Able).

A thoughtful renovation within an existing building, the UW Children’s Center at Portage Bay is designed as a sustainable, connected and playful environment for infants and children up to age five. Child-sized windows connect rooms at their level, inviting children to explore and build relationships across age groups and learning spaces. Newly landscaped outdoor areas transform a vacated space between parking garages into a learning community and recreation area. 📷: @k7scott

HOLIDAY GREETINGS! We were honored to work with the Yosemite Conservancy and National Park Service to restore, protect and provide access to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. These trees are described as “witness trees”—quiet observers that continue to preside over successive layers of human and natural experience. Wishing you restorative experiences in the year to come! Mithun recently partnered with Techbridge Girls to inspire a group of 20 students to change the world through careers in STEM. The girls from Chinook Middle School spent the day with women in our architecture, landscape architecture and interior design teams, learning about design careers and working side-by-side on a hands-on activity that emphasized how each discipline shapes the built environment. What an incredible learning experience for all involved. A participant shared, “I am more interested in engineering and architecture… I want to make schools that have a great wellness structure for kids to love to work in.” We agree! 📷: Maren McBride

It was fantastic to meet with the local community and hear their thoughts on the new environmental education center planned for Seattle's Washington Park Arboretum! Coverage in the Madison Park Times features preliminary concepts and sustainable design strategies. If you missed the event, you can still share comments with Seattle Parks and Recreation through mid-January (see link for details). https://bit.ly/2QSHeNs

Nestled into a steeply sloping site at the campus edge, the @UCLA Lot 15 Residence Halls are bordered by an ecological preserve, residential neighborhood and the formalized campus grid. The design celebrates this context, drawing native landscape and pedestrian circulation through the site to create an immersive living/learning experience within the grove. Image: Plompmozes
