Acoustic distraction consistently ranks as the top workplace complaint on employee surveys, with blame largely directed at poorly designed open offices. If noise is a given, how can designers best support employee focus and productivity? Architectural Record turned to Mithun partner Bill LaPatra and the design of Microsoft’s Bellevue offices for answers. The workplace invites staff to move between the shared open office and acoustically tailored activity spaces—including kitchens, a range of enclosed meeting rooms, and collaboration nooks—to obtain the physical layout and sound control best suited to the task at hand. A glimpse into the concept and assembly of “Sticks and Strings,” on display at the @seadesignfest Block Party this weekend in Occidental Park. This temporary installation provides visitors moments of play, relaxation and engagement while sponsoring small bonds of trust by encouraging individuals to achieve physical balance through social cooperation.
