Happy New Year! We’re entering 2020 with a spring in our step and renewed focus on creating positive change through design. Featured in the photo are townhouse entries at Arras—a new mixed-use residential community in Bellevue’s Spring District, an evolving 36-acre transit oriented development centered on a future light rail station. With a pedestrian scale that puts people first, the project promotes social interaction and healthy living. Explore the project at http://mithun.com/project/arras (clickable link in bio) 📷: @k7scott

UC Irvine’s Middle Earth Expansion weaves a new living-learning community into the larger campus fabric. Two residential towers rise above a mixed use podium and richly landscaped base, echoing the natural form and color of the region’s limestone canyons. Centrally located along the central Ring Road, a primary pedestrian connector on campus, this gateway project offers diverse pathways to access or pass through Middle Earth. 📷: @k7scott

HANDS-ON LEARNING: Student-led exploration drives learning at the Athenian School’s new industrial arts maker space. In the Mithun-designed Makers Studio, an array of tools and electronics support student-led projects including an FAA approved two-seat plane made by hand, a bio-digester that makes methane from compost, a mobile refrigeration unit with electronic generation for third world countries and even a scalable bionic heart and prosthetic limb. Exciting to see the innovations happening here! 📷: Joe Fletcher

Maker labs open doors to STEM careers. Currently under construction at Seattle University, the new Center for Science and Innovation aims to break down academic silos in sciences and engineering, and to make STEM learning relevant to the entire student population by placing the disciplines within a welcoming, student-centered hub for social gathering and events. The staffed innovation lab is an interdisciplinary and inclusive environment that encourages curiosity and exploration among all students to activate more diverse student engagement with the sciences.
