Optimizing an Historic Campus

Annie Wright Schools Master Plan

Tacoma, WA

Planning for a Thriving Legacy

Founded in 1884, Annie Wright Schools has developed into a tightly knit campus, prompting a master planning effort to support its strategic plan. Holistic analysis of existing program spaces, systems and curriculum provided important benchmarks for evaluating needs and goals.

Deep Process of Engagement

An inclusive programming process with staff, students and community identified educational space gaps and barriers such as classroom size deficiencies and aging infrastructure. It also clarified priorities like a pool to replace their dilapidated one where generations of students have learned to swim.

Flexibility for Future Generations

The resulting master plan accommodates expanded K-12 curriculum called for in the AWS strategic plan through sensitive insertion of new building footprints into the fragile campus edge spaces and improves site access through better pathways and flow strategies.
