A Legacy of Justice

Hirabayashi Place Workforce Housing

Seattle, WA

New Life for Japantown

Located on a prominent intersection in a neglected corner of downtown Seattle, this project brings affordable housing and a new gateway presence to the International District’s historic Japantown. Hirabayashi Place is at the heart of it all: within walking distance to markets, employment, regional transit and cultural centers.

Supporting Social Justice

Named for Gordon Hirabayashi, who defied the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII, the building features art installations that will enlighten visitors about his legacy of justice. The facility also includes a daycare with rooftop play space that will be operated by El Centro de la Raza.

Innovative Approaches Prevail

A creative technical design enabled construction to occur above operating Metro transit tunnels without closure or delay. The project meets the Seattle Green Factor requirements, and includes stormwater planters and a green roof in lieu of a detention vault.
