Speed, Safety and Sustainability

Seattle Fire Station 9

Seattle, WA

Connection to History and Place

This replacement fire station is the third generation facility to occupy the Fremont site since 1901. Brick cladding ties the facility to surrounding historic structures. Extensive glass at the two apparatus bays reinforces visual connection for the community, brings daylight into the space, and provides views to the adjacent greenbelt.

Ever-ready Operations

The station is designed with bunk rooms on the ground floor to ensure the fastest response times and safety for its firefighters. This commitment to readiness is also celebrated by Peter Requiem’s eye-catching sculpture of a giant black cat inspired by the Eveready Battery icon, the adopted mascot of the station for decades.

Resource Stewardship

Key sustainable strategies include rainwater harvesting for reuse as irrigation, toilet flushing and truck washing; pervious paving; drought tolerant planting; daylight and views in 98 percent of the regularly occupied spaces; and energy efficient HVAC systems.
