Date Posted: 09.15.2021

Two Mithun projects were recognized for excellence in design and program resolution as part of the AIA Washington Council 2021 Civic Design Awards program. Winners were selected from nearly 30 submitted projects, representing the highest standard in design excellence and client satisfaction among publicly funded projects in Washington state.

The Center for Advanced Manufacturing Technology (CAMT) at Clover Park Technical College received an Honorable Mention for Program Resolution. CAMT colocates manufacturing-related programs and workforce development activities in a signature, state-of-the-art facility that serves as a magnet for students, teachers and industry partners. Located at the main entry to campus, the Center is a gateway to the college and applied technology education—putting the college’s mission and programs on display. In particular, the design jury complimented “the transparency of the building, of learning, of curiosity.”

Blakely Elementary School for Bainbridge Island School District received a Merit Award. This new replacement elementary school incorporates diverse indoor and outdoor learning spaces for students in preschool through fourth grade. Views from classrooms and the library toward the learning courtyard and forest beyond reinforce connection to nature throughout the learning experience and celebrate the rural Bainbridge setting. The jury was impressed by the contextual relationship of the school to the site, and how the design incorporates diverse timber and natural elements, and child-scaled details to enrich students’ daily exploration and academic development.
