In a year filled with uncertainty and struggles for the communities we serve, we are especially grateful for each of you and the important work we have done and continue to achieve together as collaborators, partners and friends. We wish you all the best for a beautiful holiday season and year ahead filled with an abundance of good health, optimism and friendship! Happy 2021 from all of us at Mithun! . This artwork, by our own Robinick Fernandez, represents Mithun’s ever-evolving culture, and celebrates our beliefs in sustainability and design for positive change. The Great Blue Heron, California Quail and Bird of Paradise are official emblems of the communities we serve, and the cities where we live and practice. These subjects are centered around a circle, a symbol of the promises we make to our homes and to each other. Our hope is for this circle to grow as we shape our futures together.

We’re excited to share that Mithun is one of two large architecture firms in the country to meet the @AIAnational 2030 Commitment in 2019, the most recent reporting year. Our team recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal about progress, challenges and how to accelerate the path to #netzero. In the coming year, we’ll continue to focus on integrated design and decarbonization strategies to achieve #designforpositivechange. Mass Timber at the Forest Edge. Located in the ecotone between Redwood forest and meadow grasslands, UC Santa Cruz Heller Graduate Student Housing takes inspiration from its rich natural setting and the university’s ambitious environmental goals. The design incorporates mass timber structure, panelized and pre-fabrication systems, passive-first design strategies and biophilic elements to yield Triple Net Zero performance and enhance resident health. The building’s three residential wings are joined by an open-air connector that highlights the heart of the community while providing vertical circulation, outdoor social nodes and a grand overlook with vistas to Monterey Bay. We’re working with @ForterraNW on a new attainable family housing and marketplace development for a growing community of Somali and East African immigrants, incorporating carbon-smart modular mass timber construction. Wadajir’s innovative approach incorporates CLT structural elements, utilizes sustainably harvested timber and helps generate jobs in rural Washington. The project was included in yesterday’s @NYTimes article about growing use of modular construction to achieve cost, schedule and sustainable performance efficiencies.
