We’re excited to share that the @HenselPhelps | Mithun design-build team was awarded the new Verano 8 graduate student housing project at @UCIrvine. The $215 million residential community will house 1,050 students and related amenity spaces in seven buildings targeting LEED Platinum certification. Set within an existing neighborhood of low-rise residences, the design presents a new paradigm for graduate housing with a series of five higher-density residential buildings surrounding a vibrant community center that welcomes all. Verano 8’s concrete building frame maximizes durability, minimizes long-term maintenance, and enables the use of seven-story structures that preserve valuable open space for resident enjoyment. The visitor experience at Louisiana Children’s Museum (LCM) is designed to connect people with nature from their arrival—moving through groves of live oaks, across water, onto the large ‘lagoon porch,’ through the building and into a courtyard and sensory gardens. Along the way, the periodic mist of Fujiko Nakaya’s cloud sculpture envelopes people on the lagoon bridge, instantly and viscerally creating a magical and inviting space for children, and an immersive water experience.
