A Canyon in the City

Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park Framework Plan

Kent, WA

A Hidden Gem

This plan creates awareness of Herbert Beyer’s landmarked stormwater land art and the adjacent creek and canyon by improving continuity between all existing and future park sites. An improved trail network will showcase the urban natural environment and regional water story through a range of ecosystems and programming.

Neighborhood Connector

Community engagement efforts identified the goals of equitable access between the canyon and surrounding neighborhoods, expansion of park amenities and programming, and making regional trail connections and neighborhood safe routes to school. Plans for a cross-canyon bridge, welcoming trailheads and a range of accessible trail options will encourage a diverse group of users to access the many benefits of a connected land art and nature experience.

Building Momentum Through Inclusive Storytelling

A graphic novel, available online here, is used to communicate future design and planning possibilities for the canyon in a format that is accessible to the public and builds community support for the next decade of park reinvestment. Vignettes portray fictional characters experiencing the proposed park-wide improvements from the plan’s built futures.
