Resilience Through Cultural Identity
Sustainable Little Tokyo Vision
Los Angeles, CA
Human Scale, Balanced Community
This community vision marries high-environmental performance with the thriving cultural and artistic traditions that make up Little Tokyo’s DNA. By starting with the neighborhood’s cultural and historical identity, the plan is a tool to prevent displacement and welcome the growth that comes with the new Regional Connector light rail station.
Strong Social Fabric
Little Tokyo can support its identity as a multi-cultural and multi-generational destination by supporting local businesses and cultural facilities, while rebuilding a complete transit-oriented neighborhood. The design features enhanced public space for gathering, festivals and seasonal art and landscaping. The vision helped support California Cultural District designation.
Community “Mottainai”
The vision includes new mixed-income housing and creative office space supported by new stormwater / living machine park, community solar and electric vehicle hub, and enhanced pedestrian and bike access. Aligned with the Buddhist concepts of “Community Minded” and “Not be Wasteful,” the vision has evolved into a holistic, neighborhood-wide campaign to promote the environmental, economic, and cultural sustainability of Little Tokyo.
