Natural Setting for STEM Exploration

The Overlake School Whitten Math and Science Center

Redmond, WA

Cross-Pollinated Learning

Crafted to support the collaborative teaching style of the school’s faculty, this STEM academic building is designed to promote synergy between disciplines and foster a dynamic learning environment. Two balanced wings of teaching spaces frame a central gathering atrium sized for formal and informal programs, including robotics competitions.

Fostering Connections and Discovery

A flexible innovation lab supports diverse hands-on learning activities, with sliding glass walls that open to the atrium and exterior courtyard beyond. Above, a shared educator planning and support space overlooks the building heart, reinforcing visibility and relationships between teachers and students.

Harnessing Benefits of Nature

The site is nestled between the forest and wetlands, with natural planting and stormwater management on full display. Healthy materials, and optimized daylight and fresh air bring biophilic benefits to student health and performance. Connected indoor and outdoor learning environments and a rooftop 85.28 kW photovoltaic array reinforce linkage between curriculum and the natural world.
