Celebrating History, Building the Future

Carpenters Union Local 22

San Francisco, CA

Building the Bay Area

A San Francisco organization since 1882, Local 22 takes pride in its history shaping the city. Balancing permanence with forward thinking, the new building’s dynamic form and materials honor tradition while inspiring the next generation. Carpentry techniques such as snap lines influence the geometry, and intentional use of wood, concrete and gypsum showcasing union craftsmanship.

A House for Organizing

As a hub for union members, the building serves as a permanent gathering place, fostering unity and facilitating mediation and training sessions. Investing in members’ health and resilience, the design avoids Red List materials and incorporates a large roof-mounted PV array to achieve net zero energy.

Gateway to the City

Situated on an angled lot adjacent to the SF MUNI train line, the union hall stands at a visible gateway to the Bayview neighborhood. Expansive windows are positioned to capture views, inspiring proud reflection on the Carpenters’ contribution to the city skyline.
