Expanding Student Life

University of Washington Maple and Terry Halls

Seattle, WA

Room with a View

Maple and Terry Halls are designed to provide residents with equal access to daylight during their rainy Pacific Northwest school years. By mapping sunlight patterns on each façade and varying the window sizes accordingly, the design responds poetically to this environment.

Integrated Learning and Living

Shared amenities support the University’s mission to enrich students’ lives beyond the classroom. Diverse settings like the music lab, maker space and Great Room help students learn to live healthfully, explore new activities and connect socially during their most transformational, freshman year of college.

Connecting to the City

Located west of campus near a new light rail station and bike paths, the halls contribute to an emerging, walkable and vital student housing district.  Where a superblock had created barriers in the past, the new plan increases connectivity with public plazas that extend from ground-floor spaces and activate the neighborhood.
