Landmark for Lifelong Learning
Fort Worden Building 202 Renovation
Port Townsend, WA
A Century of Service
A National Historic Landmark, Fort Worden served the US military through two world wars before its adaptive reuse into a conference center for recreation, arts, culture and history. This comprehensive renovation of Building 202 transforms the barracks building into a Lifelong Learning Center run by Peninsula College and serves as a precedent for future park projects.
Treasured Community Resource
Fort Worden State Park is a treasured amenity for the Port Townsend community and visitors. With the addition of two-year degree programs and community enrichment activities at Building 202, the project builds upon the public’s enjoyment of the park as a place for learning and recreation.
Rigorous Restoration Effort
The design team worked with Washington State Parks’ historic preservation planner to restore the building to its original appearance, including replacement of non-original steel windows and restoration of siding and trim, and renovate interiors in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
