The intent with renovations was to simplify and clarify the original structure of The Sea Ranch Lodge, amplifying the experience of this remarkable natural setting by re-orienting the public spaces, removing walls and allowing more natural light in. Previously isolated from the lounge, the solarium is now an integrated amenity with commanding views of the Pacific Ocean. The building’s enduring mass of concrete is juxtaposed against the light digital framework. Sculpted concrete louvers provide sun shading and are chiseled away to produce a covered terrace. At the street level, this rhythm is reflected within LED light bollards designed by new media artist Refik Anadol that trace and reflect motion patterns of traffic at the intersection. The art uses data-driven machine learning algorithms and communicates with the integrated billboard above at certain hours of the day (see previous image). The building exterior of The Now features simple, sophisticated finishes that accentuate the perception of a large, levitated mass. In conversation with the glow and vibrancy of the Sunset Strip, the architectural canvas frames a three-dimensional digital display, fulfilling the city’s newly created mandate to incorporate digital media in select locations. This week we broke ground on construction of The Now, a new mixed-use development with terraced retail and dining environments. Poised at the intersection of Sunset and La Cienega, the building extends along an east-west axis, withdrawing on the street-level at an angle to define a public plaza beneath a creative billboard integrated into the building façade. On the upper levels, elevated terraces provide full-service dining and green space with commanding hillside views of greater Los Angeles. Congratulations to the project team: The Now (developer), Mithun (architecture), @englekirk (structural), @kpff_la (civil), @green_mep (MEP), @salt_la (landscape), @laytonconstruct (general contractor), @orange_barrel_media (digital media agency), and @refikanadol (integrated artist).
